Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is there a serious difference between Road Cycling Shoes and Triathlon Cycling Shoes?
I’m looking to get a pair of shoes and found a very nice pair brand new and inexpensive for my size foot, which is rare; however, they’re called “triathlon” cycling shoes rather then road cycling shoes, which is what I want. Is there a serious difference or will either work?

    • ANSWER:
besides the strap positions, no. most tri shoes are going to have a three bolt pattern on the bottom for road bike cleats.

  2. QUESTION:
Is it so bad that I wear running shoes during the cycling portion of a triathlon?
I just can’t afford the peddles or the cycling shoes right now. Plus, its my very first triathlon and my goal is to just finish. I am borrowing a road bike. So, if I really like triathlons after this is over, I suppose I could invest in the cycling shoes because right now, I really enjoy riding. I have had a couple people say that using my running shoes is bad.

    • ANSWER:
Biking shoes and pedals are definitely better, but they take some time to get use to. Even more experienced riders hate to admit it but they sometimes fall clicking in and out. I would not recommend them to a newbie. In general running shoes are made for comfort and are light weight, biking shoes are hard weight is a concern but the goal is to keep your foot in the right position over the long haul so there are some trade offs. I would say get the stiffest running shoe you can tolerate and practice with toe clips. The toe clips will hold your foot in the right position. You will loose some efficiency but it may pay off in overall race.

  3. QUESTION:
Are triathlon cycling shoes appropriate for track cycling??
Since cycling shoes that are specifically designed for competitive track cycling are hard to find and usually expensive i was wondering if triathlon shoes are good enough. They seem lighter and more aerodynamic than the usual road shoes but will they provide enough grip and safety for competitive track cycling? Im specifically looking for sprinting events and the kilo. Thanks for your help

    • ANSWER:
usually track cyclists strap their shoes onto the pedals, so they don’t come off or unattached. there are straps that you can buy.
I agree with the previous poster that track cyclists like 0 float.
road cycling shoes are designed to separate from the pedals if you kick out or will come unattached if under great pedaling duress. Track cyclists have some serious power in their legs and need them to work like pistons, especially when jockeying for position from the dead start of a race.

Depending on your level of competition and frequency, I would reccommend either a. if youre serious about track cycling and want to get into it to look for the track shoes and straps, or b. if this is a one time, feel it out, try your current road setup.

fair warning, you may get laughed at by some of the veteran trackies if you show up with road setup. ;)

  4. QUESTION:
Should I race the Xterra off-ride MTB triathlon in road cycling clip on shoes or my running shoes?
I completed my first road triathlon last week on a road bike with shimano SPD clip ins. I am competing in the Hawaii Xterra mountain Men Tri this weekend and I can’t afford new MTB clip in shoes. Should I use my road clip ins or my running shoes with regular pedals?

    • ANSWER:
If you are used to clip ins then stick to clip ins, you will really miss the pedaling efficency if you try cycling in running shoes… But if you have to hike a bike much in road bike shoes it will probably kill your time. I would say look for some cheap mtb shoes, but you probably don’t have time to find any or break them in…

Good luck , hope you do well!

  5. QUESTION:
which shoes should i get for triathlon?
its my brothers birthday soon and he is into triathlon. i want to get him some shoes but i dont know which ones. my idea was to get him cycling shoes but when i had a look i saw that you can get shoes for cycling and triathlon. whats the difference? and which ones are better?

    • ANSWER:
Even if you decide what kind of shoes to buy, most athletes are very particular about their athletic shoes. Proper fit and comfort are very important.

So, what to do about his impending birthday? Decide if you want to buy him running shoes or cycling shoes. Then get a gift certificate for either a running shoe store or a cycling shoe store. That way he can pick the shoes that feel right for him.

  6. QUESTION:
Long Distance Cycling: Achilles tendon pain?
I ride my bicycle to transport my rear end to places. Lately I’ve been traveling long distances (56-60+mi) and this is on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Well it’s Friday and after around 200 miles of cycling this week my Achilles tendon are feeling battered. I usually wear short polyester socks that do not cover my ankles. I have a decent pair of cycling shoes (triathlon style), also I’m confident that my bicycle is well fitted to my body. What could be creating this problem just below and behind my ankles?
I think you guys hit it with stretching, I usually don’t stretch before exercising.

    • ANSWER:
You may have your saddle too high and using you ankles too much. You want to take it easy for the first 10 min to warm up, I found it makes a huge difference. You really don’t want to stretch your muscles when they are cold you can do more harm then good. You also want to keep your cadence high with a lite pressure on the pedals.

  7. QUESTION:
    Cycling Shoes? What to wear?
I’m doing a Triathlon, but i’m pretty amateur with biking supplies. I was thinking of just doing the biking portion in my running shoes since that is what I’ve been training in. What are your thought? I have no other shoes really. The shoes I’m using are very lightweight they’re for racing. If that makes it any better. Will this be okay?
